In January 17, 2026, a group of 10 volunteers helped remove some giant bittersweet vines from hardwood trees on the new disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park. Ed Murtagh made a timelapse video of the work required to free one tree from a particularly bad infestation of mature vines.
3/7/26: Twenty-five volunteers helped free trees from invasive vines around University Hills and Lane Manor Parks in Hyattsville. Chesapeake Climate Action Network led the event, with NNWB members and certified Weed Warriors Ed Murtagh and Ben Simasek participating.
On Oct 5, 2025, members of NNWB and Friends of Sligo Creek removed wintercreeper at Matthew Henson Park. Check out a video with NNWB’s Scott Zillmer explaining the process and a time lapse of the impressive removal!
In July 2024, we partnered with Ed Murtagh from Friends of Sligo Creek to organize a weed warrior workday right along the brand new Northwest Branch Trail in Northwest Branch Recreational Park. Ed made a timelapse video of a few warriors liberating a large tree from giant bittersweet vines,
On May 19, 2024, NNW joined Weed Warrior friends from Rockville, led by Monica Berger, to free hundreds of trees from large bittersweet vines in the area of the soon-to-come disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park.
